CURRICULUM

     Texas HOPE Literacy offers curriculum that is research-based with a track record that meets all the basic beginning skills requirements of the state curriculum.  The Program also meets all the descriptors of Texas Education Agency for students who are behind in reading.  The teaching method adopted by Texas HOPE Literacy was recommended as a "best practice" by the National Institute of Health Researchers for Children with Dyslexia in December 2000.

Texas HOPE Literacy Curriculum Includes:

     *  Alphabet Dictionary Skills

     *  Reading/Comprehension

     *  Greek/Latin Roots

     *  Grammar/Diagramming

     *  Spelling

     *  Cursive Writing and Composition

     *  Math

     *  B.E.S.T., Better English Speakers Today, a bilingual program that teaches students to speak, read, write and spell in English

Multisensory Curriculum

     Peer Educators are trained to teach MTS (Multisensory Teaching System) Reading curriculum written by Margaret Taylor Smith. This curriculum is a structured intensive phonics-based approach to reading.  Students are engaged through three pathways to the brain...visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. HOPE peer educators teach concepts, and use procedures to guide students through the process of reading words. The methodology gives learners independent lifetime reading skills.

HOPE'S TEACHING APPROACH

  •  Individualized instruction is taught by inmate peer educators to inmate students. The programs operates four days a week.

  •  Students are taught curriculum procedures to aid memory and retention.

  •  Mastery checks are given to test students knowledge.

  •  All subjects are related to necessary life skills used in the free world.
