Texas HOPE Literacy
The Impact of Illiteracy Among Incarcerated Adults
A study by UT Medical Branch in Galveston concluded that 80% of Texas adult prisoners are functionally illiterate. The average adult inmate dropped out of school in the sixth or seventh grade and functions at a fifth grade level or below. The statistics for adult inmates are virtually the same as with juvenile offenders, the only difference being age. HOPE prepares people of all ages who have learning difficulties to become academically motivated and gain lifetime, independent reading skills. HOPE Literacy offers a Peer Educator program for adult inmates. Eligible inmates are trained to teach their functionally illiterate peers to read.
